Is Your Computer Running Slow? Here’s Why — and How to Fix It

10.06.2026 · Cloud and Tech

Is there anything more frustrating than staring at a spinning wheel while your computer takes five minutes to open a browser? You’re not alone — a slow computer is one of the most common reasons people call us here at Cloud and Tech in Nelson Bay.

The good news is that most slow computer problems have a straightforward cause, and many of them can be fixed without spending a cent on new hardware.

Here’s what’s usually going on — and what you can do about it.

1. Your Computer Hasn’t Been Restarted in a While

This sounds too simple, but it fixes more problems than you’d expect. When a computer runs for days or weeks without a restart, it accumulates background processes, half-finished updates, and memory clutter that gradually slows everything down.

Fix: Shut down completely (not sleep — actual shutdown) and start it back up. If your computer feels noticeably faster afterwards, this was your problem.

2. Too Many Programs Starting Automatically

Every time you install a new program, it often adds itself to your startup list. Over time you end up with dozens of programs all trying to load the moment you turn the computer on — before you’ve even opened anything yourself.

Fix on Windows 10/11: Right-click the taskbar → Task Manager → Startup tab. Disable anything you don’t recognise or don’t need immediately on startup. If you’re unsure what something is, give us a call — we can talk you through it.

3. Your Hard Drive is Almost Full

Windows and macOS both need a certain amount of free space on your hard drive to function properly — roughly 10–15% free. When you get below that, everything slows down significantly.

Fix: Check your available storage. On Windows, open File Explorer and look at your C: drive. On Mac, click the Apple logo → About This Mac → Storage. If you’re below 10% free, it’s time to clear out old files, empty the recycle bin, or look at moving photos and documents to an external drive or cloud storage like OneDrive.

4. You Have a Virus or Malware

Malicious software running silently in the background is a significant drain on your computer’s performance. It’s also dangerous — it can steal your passwords, access your bank accounts, and spy on everything you do online.

Fix: Run a full scan with Windows Defender (built into Windows 10/11 and completely free) or Malwarebytes Free. If the scan finds something and you’re not confident removing it yourself, don’t ignore it — call us. This is exactly what we’re here for.

5. Your Computer Needs Its Updates

Skipping Windows or macOS updates doesn’t just leave you vulnerable to security threats — it can also cause performance issues. Updates often include fixes for bugs that slow down your system.

Fix: On Windows, go to Settings → Windows Update and install any pending updates. Yes, it takes a while, but it’s worth doing.

6. It Might Just Be Getting Old

Most computers have a practical lifespan of 5 – 7 years. After that, even a clean, well-maintained machine will struggle with modern software. If your computer is more than 6 years old and running slowly despite trying the steps above, it may simply be time to look at a replacement.

Before you spend money on a new one though, there are two upgrades that can give an older computer a new lease on life at a fraction of the cost:

Both are relatively inexpensive and something we do regularly for home users and seniors across the Port Stephens area.
